"Mattausch’ artistry in painting his everyday subjects is nothing of the ordinary. Known for his distinct style, encompassing both, realism and abstraction, his technical mastery of oil painting is breathtaking, while the character of the color palette he uses is a marvel of its own. " (Abend Gallery/Denver, 2018)

About me

I am a painter and draftsman, living and working in Leipzig, Germany. I was born and raised in a provincial town nearby, in a region called Saxony. As long as I can remember, I felt drawn to painting. However, after school, I started studying architecture and then worked in the profession for a few years in Hamburg. While I quickly realised it wasn't the right thing for me, it took me a few detours before I finally did study painting. The trigger was a study visit to Andalucia, Spain. I worked part-time in an architectural office and painted during my spare time. Back in Germany, I continued to do exactly that until I became a full-time painter at the end of my studies. I still am a full-time painter today.

Inspired by people, nature and the link between the two, I paint quotidian scenes of life I am surrounded by. Exploring the urban landscape and human beings, I find extraordinary qualities and marvelous moments in everyday life. You can pass an ordinary scene a thousand times and nothing special happens. You pass it for the 1001st time, and suddenly, the light has changed, or the season, or you are there at night, and the appearance is full of wonderful colours. And I am desirous of painting that. These are the wonders, which occur every day.
